15-03-2005 19:05 Visa-free regime for EU citizens travelling to Ukraine is Ukraine's first step toward opening boundaries between Ukraine and EU
Chief of the consular service department of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Mykola Tochytskyi told this today news briefing.
He didn't confirm or deny information that Ukraine is to unilaterally introduce the visa-free regime by March 29, but stressed that the regime will be introduced before the Eurovision contest. Answering a question, whether a similar step is expected from the European Union, Mr Tochytskyi said that "the EU can't make the same move toward Ukraine." Negotiations on simplifying the visa regime for Ukrainian citizens are underway, however the EU can't fully cancel the visa regime with Ukraine for disparity in the Ukrainian visa-migration policy and European standards. According to him, Ukraine should work hard to bring its visa-migration norms to the EU level, only then, the door to Europe will open for Ukraine. Touching upon Ukraine's losses from canceling the visa regime for European citizens, Mykola Tochytskyi noted that Ukraine will profit from the advantages, which it gains from the move in the future.
