Ukrainian National Guard servicemen have detained self-proclaimed "people's mayor" of Mariupol Oleksandr Fomenko and two activists of the so-called Donetsk People's Republic (DPR) during a special operation, the press service of the National Guard has reported.
"It is known that Oleksandr Hryhorovych Fomenko is the organizer of terrorist activity and separatist actions in Donetsk region. The 'chief of a DPR committee in Mariupol,' Mykola Vasyliovych Lysohor, and DPR activist Serhiy Oleksandrovych Zymnytsky were detained together with citizen Fomenko," reads the statement. Large amounts of campaign materials for distribution, as well as an arsenal of weapons and ammunition, were seized during the arrest, which took place in the city centre. Local media reported that early on Thursday, in the center of Mariupol, four gunmen in masks got out of Ford and Mitsubishi cars. They stopped a black Honda and took the driver and passenger out of the car and pushed them to the ground. Then they drove them in an unknown direction. According to unofficial reports, the Honda belongs to Mariupol "people's mayor" Oleksandr Fomenko.
