13-03-2008 18:55 Latvian Sejm adopted Declaration on Soviet Repressions in Ukraine in 1932 - 1933 and recognized Holodomor as genocide of Ukrainian people
The Latvian deputies discussed the document, proposed by the Latvian Foreign Ministry, but they did not like the gentle wording of the document, and as a result of a dispute a decision was taken to write down the word "genocide" into the Declaration.
Therefore, Latvia joined 15 countries, which recognized the Holodomor as genocide at the parliamentary level. The Declaration was prepared in respond to Ukraine's appeal to the international community to recognize and condemn the fact of the Holodomor, the famine in Ukraine in the 1930ies of the 20th century. Ukraine continues to obtain recognition of the Holodomor as genocide at the UN level.
