09-02-2006 20:06 Editor-in-chief of popular Ukrainian newspaper "Today" apologizes before Muslims for publishing cartoons, satirizing Prophet Muhammad
We express our regret in case we have really assaulted somebody in the religious manner and we apologize for that, Ihor Huzhva said.
According to him, the newspaper didn't mean to assault Muslims as it respects Islam. After the "Today" newspaper published cartoons, satirizing the Prophet Muhammad, representatives of Muslim and public organizations petitioned the mass media with a request to seriously approach publishing relevant materials. Muslim organizations of Ukraine made public a statement, saying that Muslims of Ukraine wish promoting tension neither in Ukraine, nor in the world. We understand that the newspaper published the cartoons in order to disseminate information in Ukraine and not to assault Muslims, without forecasting possible consequences. We are also grateful to all other newspapers for respecting Muslims' feelings and refusing to publish the cartoons. We wish promoting tension neither in Ukraine nor in the world and hope for mutual understanding and respect of representatives of different cultures and religions, it says in the statement. President Yuschenko criticized the situation and stated his disapproval of any display of impatience and xenophobia.
