Monument to Taras Shevchenko unveiled in Latvia

The website of the state-owned General Directorate for maintenance of foreign missions reports. "The uniqueness of the monument is that it was created by sculptor Ihor Hrechanyk in Ukraine and financed through public donations by Ukrainians and foreign nationals who reside in Latvia listed by the Ukrainian Congress in Latvia. The total costs of the monument amounted to about 85,000 euros," a statement said. It also notes the community had no funds to transport the monument so the state-owned General Directorate for maintenance of foreign missions fully covered these expenses. The opening ceremony of the monument was attended by prime ministers of Ukraine and Latvia Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Laimdota Straujuma.
