03-07-2009 16:18 Speaker accuses MPs of trying to 'make situation absurd'
Verkhovna Rada Chairman Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that today's situation in parliament was evidence of attempts by certain parties to realize a scenario for the future destabilization of the situation in Ukraine.
He said that the Regions Party continued insisting on the consideration of a bill increasing social benefits, although, he added, this document had not been registered in parliament. “There is an attempt to make the situation absurd,” Lytvyn said, adding that the Regions Party does not explain where it found the sources of additional funds to increase the living wage and the minimum wage. He said that the Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko was against an increase in social benefits, as it wants to avoid responsibility for a possible collapse of the budget, while the Regions Party, he added, wants to “rise to power from the ashes.” Lytvyn also said that one of the goals of the current confrontation was the holding of early parliamentary elections. He said that parliament should immediately consider the question of ministerial appointments. On the one hand, the Regions Party was accusing the government of failing to work and having no finance minister, but on the other hand, it was blocking the consideration of this issue. Parliament should have considered a number of ministerial appointments at extraordinary meetings on July 1 and July 3, but it failed to discuss these issues due to being blocked by the Regions Party.
