03-07-2009 12:58 Ukraine takes lead in grain export
With the prospects of the 2009 grain harvest at 42 million tons and carry-over grain of 7.5 million tons, there are more than enough resources to hold high relevance of the factor of Ukraine's export on the global market, Serhiy Stoyanov, the Director General of the Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC), said.
“Surely, this should be taken into account by investors first of all, who want to tie up their money into the farming sector, grain logistics, grain trade,” he added. According to the UAC, in 2008/09 Ukraine is ranked third in the world in terms of cereals export with the result of 24.7 million tons. The commanding lead, Stoyanov says, is taken there by the United States (about 75mn tons), then goes the European Union with 28 million tons and Russia occupies the 4th place (22mn tons). “However, considering that the EU involves 27 countries, so Ukraine takes not the third place among exporting countries, but, if anything, the second place on grain export. And this is a quite firm place,” Stoyanov underscored.
