The UEFA Cup, gained by Ukraine's FC Shakhtar Donetsk for the last time, is passing on the baton to the UEFA Europa League.
Matches of the first qualifying round of the inaugural UEFA Europa League will take place today in 23 cities of the continent. The second legs are scheduled for July 9. A rival of Ukraine's FC Metalurh Donetsk in the second qualifying round (16/23 July) will be determined after the two leg tie between Montenegro's FK Sutjeska and FC MTZ-RIPO of Belarus. A bronze winner of Ukraine's domestic championship, FC Metalist Kharkiv, will enter the field from the third qualifying round (30 July/6 August), while the owner of the Ukraine Cup, FC Vorskla Poltava, kicks off from the play-off rounds (20/27 August) to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage. The final of the UEFA Europa League be held at the Arena Hamburg in Germany on Wednesday 12 May 2010.
