01-07-2009 15:38 President addresses prosecutor general's office over publication of economy statistics
Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko this week is waiting for resolution from the prosecutor general's office about legitimacy of government decisions according to which the statistic of economic indicators of the state is not made public, the presidential press service reported.
Yushchenko says the relevant government decisions must be abolished. He expressed confidence that the Cabinet of Ministers is concealing economic indicators for one only reason: those indicators are poor. The head of state once again noted that the macroeconomic indicators of 2009, on which the national budget was calculated, were overstated: particularly, under the government's estimates, the GDP rise for 2009 was suggested at the level of 0.4%. “It must have been a non-professional approach, a populism,” the President says. He emphasized that this approach had led to a situation when in the five months of the current year the national budget deficit made UAH 7 billion, with the annual perspective of UAH 9 billion (UAH 7.63 / USD 1). “Overstated populist budget withdrew from the government the right to borrowing funds from the market. Having adopted a 'rosy budget', the Ukrainian government deprived this country of the finance, which due to the deficit were to come via loans, including domestic, through the National Bank, go to the national budget and be channeled for settlement of critical problems,” Yushchenko said.
