26-03-2009 11:33 Ukraine uses just 1% of its Europe's 4th biggest alternative energy resource
Ukraine must seriously embark on the energy saving policy, President Viktor Yushchenko told a meeting on power efficiency issues.
He emphasized that the bodies of local government must do the bulk of the work in this direction, “and the central bodies of power must provide them with appropriate regulation, and create favorable conditions to encourage energy saving.” In this regard Yushchenko expressed the need for the speediest adoption of local energy saving programs in each region. According to the President's Secretariat, those programs have been adopted in Kyiv and Donetsk region alone. Yushchenko noted that Ukraine is Europe's 4th by the volume alternative energy resources. Particularly, the domestic reserves of peat are estimated at two billion tons, and brown coal at seven billion tons. Ukraine's annual potential of energy from renewable sources is estimated at 78 million tons of conventional fuel, including 7 million tons from solar energy, 33 million tons from geothermal energy, 23 million tons from biomasses, 16.5 million tons from wind energy, and 0.5 million tons from the energy of small rivers. At the same time, the use of alternative and renewable sources in Ukraine's energy balance is less than 1%, compared to 24% in Sweden and 4% in Ireland.
