04-03-2009 16:24 UEFA holding anti-racism conference in Warsaw
About 250 delegates from the European football associations, clubs, leagues, NGOs and politicians are participating in the UEFA 'Unite Against Racism' conference in Warsaw. The main objective of the conference includes raising awareness of the problems of racism, intolerance and discrimination in football.
The conference participants will share best practice in addressing the problem of racism in the society and football in particular. The participants will also focus on the problems of the Roma ethnic minority, meaning of various national identities among funs, the role of fans during UEFA EURO 2012, threats of antisemitism and nationalism. An example of combating this social phenomenon is creation under the auspices of UEFA, the pan-European Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) network, of a televised video-clip to support the anti-racism campaign. “We now want to create an opportunity to review progress and renew our call for action. In particular, we want to record positive developments and in view of UEFA EURO 2012 look at the challenges facing us in the east and what more the European football family can do", UEFA General Secretary David Taylor writes in his invitation letter for the Warsaw conference. Adam Giersz, Secretary of State of the Polish Ministry of Sport and Tourism, noted that the Polish government will be doing its best to eliminate racism at the stadiums by 2012. The modern sport bears a threat of racism, corruption, doping, violence at the stadiums. The problem of racism in Poland has been eased over the past several years thanks to the government's actions, the Polish Football Federation (PZPN), the Football League (Ekstraklasр SA) as well as the 'Never More' association, Adam Giersz said. UEFA, together with the players' union FIFPro and FARE organized the conference. Two previous conferences of this nature have taken place, in London in 2003 and in Barcelona.
