29-10-2008 16:02 Ukraine and European Union starting on October 30 dialogue on introduction of visa-free regime
Foreign Minister Volodymyr Ohryzko will represent Ukraine during the talks, while the EU will be represented by Vice-President of the European Commission Jacques Barrot.
The visa dialogue will be held in a format of meetings, involving Ukraine's top-ranking officials, and at the level of experts. The first meeting to agree major parametres of the dialogue will take place tomorrow. The Ukrainian delegation will be headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Kostiantyn Yeliseyev, while the European delegation - by Director for Immigration, Asylum and Borders at the European Commission's Directorate General for Justice, Freedom and Security Jean-Louis De Brouwer. The dialogue is to be held according to four major directions, particularly ensuring the safety of documents (including biometric data collection), fighting illegal immigration, including the question of readmission, maintaining public order and security, and external relations. Further work will take place at the level of experts on the basis of information about the standards, rules and procedures of the European Union, which should be met by the Ukrainian side. As reported, the decision to start the visa-free dialogue between Ukraine and the EU was taken at the Ukraine - EU Summit in Paris on September 9.
