15-10-2008 18:08 Somali pirates will not blow Faina vessel up
The Somali pirates who captured the Faina vessel with a Ukrainian crew and cargo aboard decided not to blow it up, as their negotiations with the shipowners are a success. As reported, the Faina carrying weapons was seized on September 25.
First the pirates asked USD 20 million for liberation of the vessel, and later reduced the sum to USD 8 million. On October 10, they threatened with blowing the Faina up together with the crew if the ransom is not paid in three days. On October 13, it was stated that the pirates might prolong the ultimatum at the request of the shipowner or some other people. The pirates are threatening with killing the hostages in case of a force release operation. The seamen's relatives are demanding from Ukrainian authorities to prevent a power release.
