18-10-2006 18:02 Crimean Parliament votes for staging all-national referendum on recognition of Russian as second state language
The Crimean Parliament passed an address to the President of Ukraine, Prime Minister and the Verkhovna Rada to stage an all-national referendum on recognition of Russian as the second state language.
The document, which was backed by 78 deputies, offers to "render the second state language status to the Russian language in the order set by the Constitution of Ukraine through debating the issue at the nation-wide referendum. The address also urges to give the Russian the regional status in the regions, where the Russian language is spoken by the majority of the population.
