Over two recent years, the average price of filter cigarettes increased by 220% (per box), and for nonfilter cigarettes - by almost 400% according to results of calculations, carried out by the Coalition of Public Organizations "For Ukraine Free from Tobacco Smoke."
At the same time, the share of the excise duty in the cigarette retail price also grew, but it is far behind the European level. Due to that, according to Head of the Department to Fight Tobacco of the Ukrainian Institute for Strategic Studies under the Health Ministry Kostiantyn Krakovsky, a tax for expensive cigarettes will grow by 25% since January 1, 2010, and for cheap cigarettes - by 40%. According to him, the fact that increase in prices makes the people to buy less expensive cigarettes ironically is a positive factor.
