04-02-2010 17:02 Changes to presidential election law demonstrate mutual distrust of politicians
Ukrainian Parliament Speaker Volodymyr Lytvyn has said that amendments to the presidential election law are evidence of mutual distrust of Ukrainian politicians.
He said in an interview with the Rada television channel that the frontrunners in the presidential election campaign, Viktor Yanukovych and Yulia Tymoshenko, did not trust each other and sought every opportunity "to trick each other," rather than to ensure that the election is held fairly. Lytvyn also said that the introduction of these amendments to the law would not result in vote rigging in the election if the law is clearly observed by election commission members. He said that a new clause of the law that cancelled a compulsory quorum of two thirds of commission members could not be applied if commission members, "both from Yanukovych and Tymoshenko, come and fulfill all of their duties, as required by the law."
