29-01-2010 13:56 President Yushchenko declares OUN-UPA soldiers as fighters for Ukraine's independence
President Viktor Yushchenko has participated in the solemnities to commemorate the heroes of the Battle of Kruty in Chernihiv region.
"I am sure we won the Battle of Kruty. If the fight had not taken place, if we had lost it, so we wound not have stayed today under the Ukrainian flag, we would not have spoken Ukrainian and we would not have represented a sovereign independent state. This is the price - unfortunately, it's too high price the Ukrainian nation paid to have a free independent state," Yushchenko said. He also reported about a decree he had signed January 28 to pay tribute to the fighters for Ukraine's independence in the 20th century. The head of state noted that the decree recognizes the members of the Ukrainian Central Rada, the Ukrainian People's Republic, the Western Ukrainian People's Republic, the Ukrainian State of Hetmanate, the Ukrainian Military Organization, the People's Defense Organization 'Carpathian Sich', the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists (OUN), the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), the Ukrainian Main Liberation Council and other military formations as the fighters for Ukrainian independence. The President said he has ordered the Cabinet of Ministers to work out and submit to the parliament a bill defining a legal status of the participants in the liberation movement.
