The Ukrainian parliament has rejected a bill amending the law on the election of the Ukrainian president as MPs failed to pass all of the 243 amendments to the bill after spending two days on its second reading.
Therefore, the January 17, 2010 presidential election in Ukraine will be held in line with the current law slammed by the president, the Constitutional Court and the Venice Commission. Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko and the Regions Party passed amendments to the law on the presidential election this summer. However, President Viktor Yushchenko, the Constitutional Court and the Venice Commission criticized the law. Following a decision taken by the Constitutional Court, MPs passed respective amendments to the law at first reading, however, all of them were rejected at second reading at parliamentary meetings on December 1-2.
