Somali pirates said they had freed the Ariana, a Greek ship being held hostage by them for over six months, Reuters has reported, citing the pirates.
The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry is currently checking this information and it has not been officially confirmed yet, ministry spokesperson Valeriy Dzhyhun said. The Ariana, a Maltese-flagged ship that was carrying 35,000 tons of soybeans from Brazil to Iran, was seized by pirates in the early hours of May 2, 2009. The vessel is operated by Greece's Alloceans Shipping Cю. Ltd. All of the 24 Ukrainian crewmembers of the ship are residents of Odesa and Mykolaiv regions.
