25-11-2009 15:59 Ukrainian officer killed by pirates in attack on oil tanker off Benin coast
A Ukrainian officer was killed and a further four people were injured after pirates attacked a German oil tanker, the Cancale Star, off the West African coast of Benin on November 24.
Cor Radings, an official representative of the Hamburg-based Chemikalien Seetransport GmbH, the shipping company operating the vessel, said this to journalists. According to the German media, pirates managed to board the tanker, which transported oil from Nigeria, at night and robbed money from the ship's safe. When the gang fled, one pirate was left behind and overpowered by the crew and delivered to the Beninese authorities. The ship's 24 crewmembers included five Ukrainians, four Russians, two Latvians, and 13 citizens of the Philippines. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry earlier confirmed the death of the Ukrainian citizen.
