A new safe confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant will be put into operation in November 2017, President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko said in the course of events commemorating the Chornobyl disaster, Ukrinform reported.
People won’t be able to live in the Chornobyl exclusion zone for the next 24,000 years due to high level of plutonium contamination. Currently, the Ukrainian government is looking for the best option for development of this territory, Chairman of the State Agency of Ukraine for Management of the Exclusion Zone Vitaly Petruk said.
The fund for construction of the New Safe Confinement of the Chornobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) has been functioning since 1997. Forty countries have made contributions to the construction over almost two decades, President of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development Suma Chakrabarti said at the ceremony of completing the coverage of the destroyed fourth power unit of the Chornobyl NPP.
The huge structure that will prevent further leaks of radiation from the Chornobyl nuclear power plant has been moved into its final position, Radio Liberty reports.
