The Ukrainian Defence Ministry has confirmed reports of a Ukrainian An-26 plane downed in Luhansk region, and suspects that a missile could probably be launched from Russian territory, the press service of the Ukrainian president has reported.
"Defence Minister Valeriy Heletei reported to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko that the crew of the An-26, which carried out tasks as part of ensuring the active phase of the ATO (anti-terrorist operation) and was shot down, has got in contact with the General Staff," the press service said. It noted that due to the fact that the aircraft was at an altitude of 6,500 meters, it was impossible to hit it with man-portable air defense systems. "The plane was hit by another, more powerful missile that was probably used from the territory of the Russian Federation," the press service said. The leader of the Right Cause public organization, Dmytro Snehiriov, told Ukrinform that the pilot had survived but had been detained by militants of the self-declared Luhansk People's Republic. Now, he said, the prisoner is being taken to Sukhodilsk.
