EU could introduce new sanctions against Russia on July 16 - Hague

04-07-2014 17:12

British Foreign Secretary William Hague has said in a telephone conversation with his Ukrainian counterpart Pavlo Klimkin that the European Union is ready to impose additional sanctions on Russia.

According to the press service of the British Foreign Office, the EU may strengthen measures on July 16 after a meeting of the European Council. "The UK stands shoulder-to-shoulder with European partners in efforts to secure a diplomatic solution to the violence in Ukraine, but the European Council has made clear that we are ready to impose further sanctions on Russia if they fail to take the necessary steps to end military hostility," he said. "I urge the Russian Federation to use its influence over illegally armed groups and to stop the flow of weapons and militants into the east of Ukraine," Hague said. "Russia should not expect the July 16 European Council to imagine that it is unable to secure its own borders," he said.
