Foreign ministry: Putin buries own myths on legitimacy of 'referendum' in Crimea

18-04-2014 16:02

Recognizing the illegal presence of Russian troops in Crimea, who at gunpoint held a pseudo-referendum there, Russian President Vladimir Putin has finally buried the myth of the supposedly "legitimate expression of the will" of Crimeans.

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry's Department of Information Policy said this in a statement with respect to remarks by Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday during the question and answer session. "On March 4, Putin categorically denied the involvement of Russian military in blocking the Ukrainian army units in Crimea, but on April 17 he acknowledged that the so-called self-defense forces in Crimea were Russian soldiers, who happen to have helped hold "fairly" what that the Russian side calls referendum. This recognition of the Russian president has finally buried the myth of the supposedly "legitimate will of Crimeans," the Ukrainian foreign ministry emphasized. The ministry noted that the contradictory statements by the Russian side completely discredit its position on the alleged non-involvement in the events in Crimea and eastern Ukraine. After Putin's "revelations", the foreign policy agency advised the Russian side to call a spade a spade. "After that, the next step of the Russian side should be the recognition of that incontrovertible fact that the referendum at gunpoint of foreign troops and still a state interested in its results has its own clear title - annexation, with all the international legal consequences that follow from this," the commentary said.
