"The government is planning a comprehensive reform of the entire law enforcement system," First Vice-Premier Vitaliy Yarema said meeting in Kyiv on Wednesday with British Ambassador to Ukraine Simon Smith.
"We're not only planning to change the name "militia" to "police". We are going to thoroughly and systematically reform the entire system of law enforcement agencies and rebuild the people's trust in them. We understand that punishments are not enough to stabilize the situation in the country and regain trust in the authorities. That's why we're actively working on economic reforms, restoring normal business operations, and fighting corruption," Yarema said. The British ambassador said that the UK would provide Ukraine with expert assistance in the law enforcement reform. He suggested adopting British practices of establishing a department of complaints of unlawful actions by law enforcers in Ukraine.
