06-03-2014 15:03

The Crimean parliament voted to join Russia on Thursday and moved a referendum on whether the Autonomous Republic of Crimea should stay with Ukraine or join Russia to March 16.

According to a press release of the Crimean parliament the referendum will ask whether voters want Crimea to become part of the Russian Federation or remain in Ukraine under Crimea’s post-independence 1992 constitution. The question with most votes will be seen as a direct expression of the will of the population of Crimea, the press release reads. The Crimean parliament has also addressed President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin to examine a request for their region to join the Russian Federation, which will be put to a referendum on March 16.
