Klitschko's UDAR party demands early presidential election

19-02-2014 15:00

The Ukrainian Democratic Alliance for Reform (UDAR) led by opposition MP Vitaliy Klitschko has issued a statement demanding an early presidential election.

"Having deliberately provoked bloodshed, the authorities crossed the line. They did it to preclude negotiations and not to meet the demands of the people who have been protesting for three months. Having unleashed this war against these people, President Yanukovych keeps calling them "radicals" and threatening them with court trials, prisons, and further bloodshed. The authorities set armed police and death squads on peaceful demonstrators. Yesterday's attempt to storm Maidan showed that violence never wins and never pays. They failed to break the people's resistance. The whole country has stood up against Yanukovych and he finally has to understand it," the statement reads. UDAR stressed that after dozens were killed and thousands injured, it is only an early presidential election and a total power reset that could lead the country out of the crisis.
