On August 23rd, Ukraine celebrates Flag Day.
Traditional flag hoisting ceremonies took place in the capital city Kyiv as well as all regional centres. Flag Day has been celebrated as a state holiday since 2004 to commemorate the hoisting of the blue and yellow national flag at the Kyiv City Hall in 1990, one year before Ukraine proclaimed independence. President Viktor Yanukovych took part in the ceremony of hoisting the national flag of Ukraine in front of the presidential administration building. Later on Friday, he arrived in Kharkiv to attend events marking the 70th anniversary of the city's liberation from the Nazi invaders during WW II. He laid flowers at the Monument to Liberators in the Glory Memorial and attended City Day festivities on the central Svobody Square.
